Today's Hornets tutoring session went very well. We covered the following Pre-Algebra and Algebra topics:
1. Evaluating Variable Expressions
2. Evaluating Algebraic Equations
Example for Variable Expressions:
Evaluate each using the values given.
8(x - y); use x = 5, and y = 2
Step 1: substitute values given in place of variables:
8(5 - 2)
Step 2: Solve Expression:
8(3) = 24
Example for Algebraic Equations:
3x - 4 = 8
+4 +4
_________
3x = 12
3x = 12
3 3
x = 4
To solve an equation having a variable with a number in front of it (form ax + b = c), first get the variable term by itself on one side of the equation (equals sign). To do this, add or subtract b (4 in the above equation). Then, solve as a one-step equation (divide both sides by the number that is in front of the variable. This cancels out the number, leaving the variable by itself). Solve the equation.
